BETTING IN NEW SOUTH WALES

(Received May 11. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 11. Evidence of the huge betting that is taking place, at horse and greyhound meetings in New South Wales is obtained from the figures for totalizator and bookmakers’ turnover. For the nine months of Ute racing year from July 1. 1943, to March 31. 19-14. the totalizator turnover amounted to £4,648.340. This easily heats the previous record for the Slate for any full racing year. The bookmakers’ turnover of £22,773.200 for the nine months is a record since the i per cent, tax on turnover was imposed in 1940.
