HASTINGS SCHOOLING
Dozie Boy Jumps Well Dominion Special Service HASTINGS, May 10. The most interesting of the work at Hastings this morning was the schooling by the team from here racing at Woodville and Auckland. Conditions were springlike, with the going firm and fast. Teddy Lack, a recent addition to Hastings stables, held on lease by Mrs. S.- Ryan, was tried over country. For a beginner his performance was promising, though at present he lacks the necessary confidence al the big fences. Hasten, who leaves very shortly for Auckland, where he is to race at the Waikato winter meeting before fulfilling his Great Northern engagement, was associated In a round of six schooling hurdles by Faultless in 1.385, with Faultless outjumping his opponent. However, Hasten has gone through a very thorough preparation for the northern trip, and will have solid backing from here for the big hurdles. ’ , , ~ Epping was brilliant over three hurdles, and then easily beat Lady Premier once round on the flat In 1.45. Epping was to have gone to Auckland for the big hurdles, but is being asked to give way in favour of Hasten, who is Infinitely better performed both on the flat and over hurdles. Both Timothy and Theatre for hack hurdlers gave a fast, clean display over six hurdles, running the same time as Hasten and Faultless. Both the former will race at Woodville on May 20. Dozie Boy who will accompany Hasten on the northern trip, was schooled oyer ten steeplechase fences in company with Khurja. The former fenced soundly to run the first round in 1.38, and over the final obstacle led Khurja by six lengths, a reversal of last Thursday’s school. Khurja will in all probability go to Auckland for the minor steeplechases. Taihuia had his first lesson over the big fences, scrambling over the majority, but be improved over the latter obstacles to suggest that with more tuition he should develop into a sound jumper. Opaltown and Bonnie Seot gave a good sound display of topping over a round of country, though the latter dislodged his pilot at the last fence Opaltown was withdrawn from Saturday’s Otaki engagement because no transport was available, but may have his first outing over country at Woodville the following Saturday. Beginners over hurdles in Captain Star, Sir Winstone, Royal Pageant, and Llndrum were given respective schools. Captain Star showed a decided Improvement, as also did Chat’s brother, Llndrum, but Royal Pageant and Sir Winstone look as though they will require a fair amount of schooling before becoming proficient. The best exhibition of hurdling of the morning was that by the Clive pair. Flying Spy, who Is booked for the Great Northern Hurdles, and Combination, who will race at Woodville. Their showing was up to the best standard, and had the pace been regulated better instead of going in patches, the time of 1.40 would have been appreCl lndlan et Sport, who will in all probability go north in the near future to contest the Cornwall Handleap, meets the eye as a much-improved gelding, and is very Ct, this morning running once round m 1.41, he was never in top gear when accompanied by Ozel.
