APPRENTICESHIP LAW

Commission Of Inquiry The Commission of Inquiry recently set up to examine existing legislation, bearing upon apprenticeship and to investigate existing educational facilities of both pre-vocational and vocational character held its initial meeting in Wellington on Tuesday. The commission dealt with appointments, numerous matters of procedure, .and a programme of research. Mr. R. D. Lumsden was appointed secretary to the commission and Mr. H. O’, McQueen was appointed research officer. It was decided to commence formal hearing of evidence at the Court of Arbitration, Wellington, on June 20. All persons or organizations from any part of the Dominion who desire to give evidence are requested to communicate as early as possible with , the secretary, Apprenticeship Commission, Court of Arbitration, Wellington, so that arrangements can be made. The commission proposes to hear evidence in at least the four main centres. A decision as to whether it will sit in any other centres will be made on receipt of full information as to the persons or organizations desiring to give evidence. While the commission is hearing evidence, its sittings will be open to the public and the Press. lu "The Dominion” of Tuesday it was stated that a report prepared by a subcommittee of organizations in the Auckland province would be used as a basis for discussion by the commission. No decision of this nature has been made by the commission, nor has the report in question been before it. At some later stage the report will reach the commission when, with any similar matter that may be tendered by any other organizations or committees, it will be considered. There were present Mr. Justice Tyndall, chairman, Dr. C. E. Beeby, and Messrs. C. R. Edmond, F. G. Fowler, A. Gilbert, H. E. Moston, AV.,J. Mountjoy, F. C. Renyard, R. G. Ridling, and R. Stanley. Apologies were tendered on behalf of Messrs. F. D. Cornwall and E. B. Taylor, both of whom are absent from Wellington.
