EGG DISTRIBUTION

Allocation Through Grocers

The president of the Wellington Master Grocers’ Association, Mr. H. A. Fanselow, in a statement to the Press yesterday. said he wished to clear up a misunderstanding that appeared to exist in respect to the allocation of eggs made through retail stores. The procedure for egg supplies based on butter registrations was instituted on the recommendation of the Master Grocers’ Association, and though certain anomalies would occur, the scheme in general was the best possible in the circumstances. In order that the public could be advised ns to the supply available each week, arrangements were matte with the wholesale distributors for it weekly announcement to be made through the Press, stating whether or not a distribution would be made and the quantity of eggs available for each butter registration. During the past month or so, Mr. Fanselow said, there hud been periods where no distribution had been possible, due to sufficient supplies not coming to hand, and it was during these periods that there appeared to be some confusion, ns, though the offieinl announcement would state that there would be no distribution, several stores were in a position to supply eggs to their customers. This position was brought about by the fact that during a week when a distribution was made it was impossible for the distributors to service every suburb in the early part of the week, and therefore certain suburbs would not receive 'their delivery till Thursday, or even in some cases, ns late as Friday afternoon. This means that the eggs delivered during the latter part of the week would in many eases be held over by the stores and made available t" culomers during the following week, when perhaps the official announcement would disclose that there would not be a distribution. This did not moan that anyone would be prejudiced in regard to their total supply.
