Gulf Stream Should Do Well This Winter
Gulf Stream was bred -by Mr. T. H. Ixiwry and was sold -by him to his present owner, Mr. G. A. Lang, Wellington, for 285 guineas. He is -by Tideraee from April Fool, dam also of Beaupartir, Scandal and Lambourn. He was trained as a two-year-old by V. Bryant at Foxton and won one race, was second once and third once. He was sent to C. G. Humphries at Rlccarton at the end of his two-year-old racing, and in his second start this season he won the Wanganui Guineas in September. He received an injury at the Wellington meeting in October and had only three races between then and the Banks Peninsula meeting in March, at which he won the open sprint in a decisive manner. In all, Gulf -Stream has won £665 for Mr. Lang, and as he is partial to easy going he should carry on during the winter. To Be Divided. Provision has been made for divisions in the Kuku Malden at the Otaki Maori winter meeting at Otaki on Saturday. Theioway, 8.10, should appear in the lirst division.
Now Date Granted. The South Canterbury Jockey Club has been granted June 24 for its meeting, postponed from April 29.
Biding Engagements. Riding engagements for the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting at Te Arolia on Saturday include:—W. 0. Ensor, Spring Day, Gold’Cape; W. Caddy, Varuna; A. Sinton, Disturbed: 0. Mclnally, iSkyette, Besiege; A. Toki, Night Comedy; L. C. Brown, Bronze Night; L. Collett, Borak.
Topweight’s Chance. ... on . ~a Moutoa Bond, topwelght with 9.0 in the Raukawa Handicap at Otaki on Saturday, wag second at his last start to Lowry Lay in the Great Autumn, failing by a head after opening up a big lead , oTer . the last furlong. A repetition of that form over the shorter distance on Saturday would make the Bulandshar mare very difficult to head off, but she has 181 b. more to carry, and good lightweights like Alexcella and Lady Spiral, both in winning form, will make her task difficult. However, she won the .Soekburn Handicap, one mile and a quarter,, with 8.3, against a strong field, and will not lack friends on Saturday. Moutoa Bond has started 11 times this season. She was second to Hasten over a mile at Trentham last October, and was second in the Walrarapa Cup to Alethea. Her one wln__aud three seconds have been worth £1055 to her owner, Mr. F. S. Easton.
Manawatu Meeting. The Manawatu Racing Club hag issued the programme for its winter meeting at Awapuni on June 10, and also for a special patriotic meeting on June 17. The programme in each case contains seven races, The Manawatu Steeplechase, three miles, on the first day, carries a stake of £6OO, including a trophy valued at £5O presented by the Wanganui Jockey Club. The Kangitira Hurdles Handicap is worth £4OO, and the Ngata Hack Hurdles £250. The main flat race is the Manawatu Winter Cup, one mile and a quarter, worth £2BO to the winner. An open seven and hack races over seven furlongs and a mile and a quarter complete an attractive programme. At the patriotic meeting the Matilda Steeplechase of £27'5 (Including trophy valued at £25) is half a mile shorter than the first day’s cross-country event, and the corresponding hurdle races are also shorter. The distance for the main flat race, the Achilles Handicap, is again a mile and a quarter, and there are again an open and a hack seven and a hack stayers’ race. The minimum weight in all flat races will be 8.0. Over the two days, the stakes total £3850.
Interesting Breeding. Cornucopia, third in the Trial Stakes at Ashburton, has an Interesting breeding, as she is by Irish Lancer from the wellknown galloper of a few years back, Waving Corn, -by Solferino. Waving Corn was raced by the late Mr. W. Gardiner. Oamaru, and Cornucopia was bred by her owners, Messrs. A. and B. Gardiner, also of Oamaru. She has not done much racing, but has given encouragement in all of her outings to date. Mountain Fox Well.
Mountain Fox was not capable, of doing better than third in the Hawera Handicap, but he has never looked in better order than he does at -present. This horse showed promise when put to hurdling last winter, and he should -be in splendid condition to resume that branch of racing in the near future. Sister to Supercharged. Dark Diana, who ran fourth in the Trial Stakes at Ashburton, is a two-year-old filly by Phaleron Bay from Golden Rod and is trained at Waimate -by J. Mitchell for Mr. J. C. Pankhurst. She is a sister to Supercharged, who raced in the same interests, and when the latter met his death as a two-year-old after showing marked promise of developing into a high-class horse, Mr. Pankhurst was offered and purchased Dark Diana at a reasonable figure from the breeder of the pair, Mr. A. Appleyard, Hawera. Dark Diana is a big fijly who has not been asked to do much racing, and her turn may come next season. Fair Trial.
Fair Trial is being hacked about ou tho i- Is at* Invercargill. He may be raced ie Dunedin winter meeting next month ransport is available. The Solicltor- < ..neral gelding has contested nine races this season for five firsts, a second, and two thirds and has won £1655 in stakes. In his four starts in open company to date he has gained three firsts and a third. Much Improved Jumper. The initial race he bad over hurdles at New Plymouth worked remarkable improvement in Where, who outclassed the seven horses opposed to him at Hawera. He jumped will and left the impression that he would win again in better company. He handles heavy ground well. Whero is a four-year-old gelding ' by Iliad from Black Cat, and Is raced by his breeder, Mr. W. McA. Dunean, Taihape. Troubled by Bleeding. Novocalue has always been regarded as a capable galloper, but bleeding trouble has prevented him from winning races. At the Taranaki meeting he bled badly when he appeared to have the maiden race at his mercy. A week later at Hawera he did not bleed and outclassed the backs iu the Borough H indicap. It is a colueidence that the only two occasions on which he has not been a victim to this malady this season have been at Hawera, where he was second In a hlghwelght in the autumn and first in a hack seven at the weekend. Novocalne is a three-year-old half-brother to the New Zealand Cup winner Cerne Abbas, and would have been racing In open company by now but for his vascular weakness, for be is a galloper much above the average. Hurdling Debut. Park Light’s debut as a jumper at the Egmont meeting held out hope of early improvement. In the middle stages of tho race he trailed his stablemate, Whero, but then weakened and finished a moderate third. Park Light is by Illumination, whose progeny excelled as jumpers, and he should soon do better as he gains experience in this role. Handled Heavy Going. Derryogue. winner of the two-year-old handicap at Hawera. is a chestnut filly by Foxllght from King’s Choice, raced by Mr. J. H. S. McKee, and trained at Wanganui by J. H. Campbell. Ability to handle the heavy going much better than her opponents mainly accounted for Derryogue's easy win.
