STOCK STARVING
Worst Drought For Many Years In Australia SYDNEY. May 2. In one of the worst droughts experienced in New South Wales for 42 years, thousands of sheep and cattle are dying from starvation in outback areas of the State. In some places no rain has fallen for a year. A big dron in the season’s wool clip and heavy wheat crop losses are feared. Areas mainly affected are the far west, north-west, and south-west Darts of the State. The central west and north-west slopes are also badly in need of rain. In the inland areas the weakened sheep are being attacked and eaten by wild pigs and dingoes, and crows are picking their eyes out as they lie dying. Shearing has begun to save as much as possible of the wool clip from thousands of other sheep which are expected to die. Heavy losses are expected in the new lambing season. In the far north many thousands of sheep have already died from starvation.
Unless substantial rains fall in June and July, tens of thousands of head of stock will .be lost.
