SPITFIRES’ BAG
Nine Messerschmitts In Four Minutes (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 9.
The most striking R.A.F. operation yesterday, says a correspondent, was the shooting down of nine Messerschmitts m four minutes by eight Spitfires of the Basutoland Squadron north of Rome. It ■was the Spitfires’ first offensive sweep after some weeks of routine patrols over the Anzio beach-head, and they jumped on a formation of 18 Messerschmitts. The Naples correspondent of the Ex change Telegraph Agency says that Flying Officer R. B. Hendry. Masterton, was one pilot who ecored a double victory in this battle. The Spitfires dived on the enemy from 11,000 ft.. and four minutes afterward there were nine blazing wrecks in th: woods fringing the northern edge of Lake Bracciano. Squadron Leader Arthur, of Surrey, who led the Spitfires, said: “We could clearly sec them blowing up as they hit the ground. We surprised tfie Germans, who had no chance.”
