HOUSE BREAKING
Many Cases In Central Park Area People residing in the vicinity of Central Park, Wellington, have cause to be on the alert for possible attempts at housebreaking. Of the number of breaking and entering cases that have been reported recently, a large proportion have occurred in this locality. Earlier in the year one house in Thompson Street was almost stripped bare of furniture and clothing. The tenant’s loss was estimated at £4OO, and though the culprits in this instance were caught, cases of housebreaking in this district continue to occur. Not long after the arrest of these two men, a woman whose house is situated almost opposite the scene of the robbery arrived home one afternoon to discover a strange man trying the lock of her back door. He offered the excuse that he was looking for her son, and when told that the latter had been overseas for quite a while he beat a hasty retreat. The same woman also found that her garage door had been tampered with. Yet another report of housebreaking was received, this time from Nairn Street. It was accompanied by the theft of a car in Thompson Street which, it was discovered later, was used in the robbery in Nairn Street. The property taken was infiinitesimal compared with the £4OO worth lost in Thompson Street. The stolen goods from the Nairn Street houae mainly consisted of the resident’s daughter’s silverware, which had been wedding presents.
The most recent case of housebreaking in this vicinity was again reported from Nairn Street, a house only a few doors away from the scene of the previous robbery. Nothing was taken, however. The repeated occurrence of this type of crime in the Central Park area points to someone who has a sound- knowledge of the locality.
