WILL APPLETON, CITIZENS' CANDIDATE FOR MAYORALTY, SAYS: LABOUR is endeavouring to capitalize the housing shortage to discredit us. What are the true facts? When the Labour Government began intensive house-build-ing the City Council recognized the futility of competing and forcing up building costs. Councillor Chapman (Labour) endorsed this viewpoint. What the Council did do was to .iprovide suitable areas of land free to- the State at Homebush and Wilton Roads. With the demand for labour and materials in the construction of defence works before and during the Japanese prisls, the Government had good reasons for stopping all house building, including State (houses; ’ Last year the only house-building authorized by the Building Controller was three rooms of one house done by a carpenter for himself. The City Council has a good Housing (Scheme which provides home ownership. Under it any citizen can erect a house to his own design and where he wants it to the . limt of £l5OO. Interest and capital repayments cost less than rent. The Council provides up to 90 per cent, of the value of house and section. Prior to the shut-down on house-building we had 139 applications and 109 houses have actually been built. To provide an additional’4oo houses the Council has recently obtained sanction of a further £lOO,OOO. When this is exhausted we will raise another. Further, the Council is calling tenders for 25 houses to be built on our own land. These are intended as examples of. what can be done and at what cost under present conditions. Now that the position is easing in respect to labour and materials the Council confidently expects a vigorous prosecution of its scheme. Don’t be misled by the statements made by Labour. Support men and women who can and will provide homes for the people on generous terms.' Vote for WILL APPLETON AND THE CITIZENS' TICKET.
