AWARDS FOR BRAVERY

New Zealand Soldiers Advice that the King has approved of the following awards to 2nd N.ZJd.F. personnel in recognition of gallant and distinguished service in the field, has been received by the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones Bar to D.S.O. — Captain Donald John Stott, D.S.O. Mrs. A. Stott, 28 Onewa Street, Birkenhead t(m.). D.C.M.— 2nd/Lieut. (Robert McDonald Morton. Mrs. Hilda Morton, Pirorau Street, Dargaville (m.). Military Medal. — Sgt. John, Alexander Redpath, D.C.M. Mr. J. A. Redpath, 101 Cashel Street, Christchurch (f.). Captain’Stott, who is 28 years old, left New Zealand with the first echelon. In October,. 1941. he was presumed prisoner of war, having been missing for some months, but in December of the name year was reported to be safe at the 2nd N.Z.E.F. base camp. He was awarded the D.S.O. in August of last year. Before the war he was employed by the "New Zealand Herald" as a rotary machinist. Before the war a clerk employed by the Post and Telegraph Department in Whakapore. Second-Lieutenant Morton left New Zealand with the first echelon. He was taken prisoner in July. 1941, but in December was safe with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. He was reported wounded in October. 1942. He is 25 years of age. Sergeant Redpath. who, before the war was a company manager In Wellington for Westland Developments, Ltd., left New Zealand in August. 1940. He has been posted missing twice, hut. in both cases he was later reported safe at 2nd N.Z.E.F, Base Camp. In March, 1042. he was awarded the D.C.M.

D.F.C. FOR FLYING OFFICER

Successful bombing attacks on targets in Germany and occupied Europe have won for Flying Officer John Milward Mee. formerly of Dunedin, the award, of the Distinguished Flying Cross. Flying Officer’Mee. who is the son of Mr. J. Mee. of Lander. Central Otago, was recently reported missing on air operations. “Flying Officer Mee has taken part in man v nt tacks on major targets in enemy territory, invariably exhibiting the utmost determination,” stales the citation accompanying his award.

Born in Dunedin, Flying Officer Mee was a student at the Mining School. Ota'-'.o University, when he joined the R.N.Z.A.F. in 1940. He gained Ids Blue'for Rugby at the University, and was also interested in cricket, tennis, and boxing.
