Wing Commander Alan Deere, ot Wanganui, who already holds the D.b.U. and the D.F.C. and bar, has been awarded the D.F.C. by the United States Army Air Force, and the Croix de Guerre avcc Palme by the Fighting French lorces.. Wing Commander Deere, when a wing leader at Biggin Hill, . frequently led a wing which escorted U.S.A.A.K bombers. Also in the wing was a Fighting 1< rencli squadron He is now resting from operations, and he lias been appointed officer commanding an important gunnery .school a position which was once held by the South African, Group Captiun A. G. Malan. ■With no fewer than five awards, Wmg Commander Deere is the most decorated New Zealand lighter pilot. The New Zealand Spitfife Squadron is now in a wing led by another famous New Zealand ace, Wing Commander W V C. Compton, D. 5.0., D.F.C. and bar, and the United States Silver Star. Group Captain A. J. Munson, of the R.N.Z.A.F. headquarters, recently visited 19 R.A.F. aerodromes in a Scottish area where New Zealanders are stationed. He also met members of the New Zealand torpedo-bomber squadron.
