It will be widely hoped that the Government will devote full and careful- consideration to various representations made by the New Zealand Police Association concerning conditions and allowances of members of the force. At all times the police of this country have given worthy service to the community—a service which, perhaps, is too often taken for granted without regard for the amount and nature of the work devolving upon individual officers. By comparison with many' other occupations today, police work offers modest reward, yet it calls for great steadiness of character and carries with it much responsibility. War conditions in New Zealand have added substantially to the burden of this work, and have done so at a time when the ranks of tho force are thin. Nevertheless these abnormal conditions have been coped with in a manner which would have done great credit to an organization with much larger reserves of men and much better and more up-to-date facilities, particularly in respect to transport and communications. Among the requests put forward by the association was one concerning superannuation after 3a. instead of the usual 40, years’ service. Another referred to the system of allowances for privately-owned motor-cars placed at (he disposal of the department. These are two matters which appear to call for early review. It seems particularly unfair, and also improper, that the State should make profit by selling motor tyres to police officers at full retail prices, rather than giving them, as in tho past, the benefit of Government contract buying.
