INLAND ADVANCE

Near Volturno Mouth

LONDON, October 18. A correspondent at the Allied beadquarters reports that in very hard fighting the troops who were landed from the sea north of the Vol turno. River in Italy have pushed eight miles inland and captured a town three miles, beyond the river in an area where bridging was extremely difficult. American forces ot the Fifth Army have captured two more towns in the upper Volturno valley. The Eighth Army has made an advance of 11 miles near the east coast. Spearhead troops entered a village from which they withdrew again, after strong German counter-attacks in the streets.
