LITTLE IMPROVED, SAYS OBSERVER
Bengal Famine Calamity (Received October 18, 8.15 p.m.) LONDON, October 18. “The best commentary on the Bengal famine is provided by the latest statistics from Calcutta, where thousands of starving people have collected from the outlying .districts seeking food,” says the “Daily Telegraph’s” Calcutta correspondent. “The statistics reveal that between August 16 and October 12, 8800 persons were admitted to hospital, 2942 of whom died. The number of dead collected from the streets between August 1 and October 12 was 4794. Last week’s deaths from starvation in the hospitals averaged 75 daily. “More than 4200 free kitchens are functioning in 10 districts in Bengal, feeding about 1,500,000 people. It is clear that the kitchens are touching only the fringe of the problem. The Indians are a most sensitive people, and the middle classes die rather than liue up for free food. "The position is tiiat the general food situation is little improved in spite of the strenuous efforts for relief.”
