Japanese-Indonesian “Co-operation”

Another indication of how the Indonesians in the Netherlands Indies "co-oper ate” with their Japanese overlords is contained in a Tokio broadcast just monitored in Australia. Broadcasting to Australia, on October 13, Tokio told that a <>3-year-old Indonesian had been decorated by the Japanese "for safeguarding one harbour crane at Sama rang—at the time of the invasion of Java —in spite of orders io relinquish his post.” . This report, was no sensation at all, as it had already been put oyer more Ilian u year ago, on August 18, 1912, by ’Tokio radio. On Hint occasion the Japanese even broadcast the report in various languages. In their Italian broadcast thev talked about "an old Javanese native praised by Hie Japanese authorities lor having saved from destruction on Mari-Il L 1912, one crane at Samarnng, Java, contrary to Dutch instructions.” In the broadcast, on the same day, for home consumption, ’Tokio told its own people that the Indonesian concerned had been •‘rewarded by the Japanese military chief at Samarnng for loyally toward Japan by saving Samarang ’base.’” JapaneseIndonesian "co-operatioii” must be at a low ebb indeed if the war bosses in Tokio have Io dig up this one glorious case of “co-n pc ra t ion.’ ’
