TWO-YEAR-OLDS AT MASTERTON
Subdued’s Good Form
(By
St. Simon.)
Eighteen of the 25 two-year-olds racing at the Masterton meeting were having their first public experience, though the race was divided, making two Helus ot handy size, the start in each instance was uneven, which is not unusual with inexperienced juveniles. The division winners were botli fillies. Young Margaret, who won the first beat hi a close contest with Martial Note, had raced once previously at Hastings, where she showed Speed‘after a slow beginning. She is a medium-sized brown tilly by Phaleron Bay from Haggada, a half-sister by Rabbi to Korero. Landmark, Revision, Consummation and Sanction,, and coming from _ the same family as Adoption (dam of Dainty Step), Lucky Days and Tripping (dam of Poutatau). Young Margaret was bred at Te Parae, near Masterton, by Mrs. Alister Williams and was bought as a yearling at the Trentham sales last January’ for HOgns. She la raced by Mrs. E. Rough, Palmerston North, whose husband has enjoyed considerable success with Young Charles, winner of the Gloucester Cup and Treutliam Hurdles. Tbo Eulogy Family,
It is almost commonplace these days to find a descendant of famous Eulogy winning races, and Subdued, who won the second heat of the Masterton juvenile race, Is a grand-daughter of that rare gem of the Koatanui diadem. Subdued Is a wellgrown filly by Ringmaster from Submission and already has the development of a colt. Her dam is by Limond from Homage and is thus fully related to Episode, Honour, Courtesy, Prestige and Courteraft, and half-sister to Heritage and Homily. Subdued is a fluent galloper, very evenly gaited, and she won with great ease by a big margin. Whether she beat anything of any consequence has yet to be established, but she could have done much better had she been extended. Subdued is raced by her breeder, Mr. G. M. Currie, and she looks like making a match of the Wellesley Stakes with the best colts. Her dam was a first-class filly' whose successes Included a win over Beau Vite and Beaulivre in the Manawatu Sire’ Produce Stakes. Mr. Currie retired her early to his stud, and if Subdued is a fair sample of her progeny she is going to make another successful brood mare among many great ones housed in this establishment. A New Breed.
Hoodikl, the runner-up to Subdued, is one of the first and only crop sired by the young Fairway horse Golden Eagle. She galloped well, but had no chance with the winner. Her dam, Merial, won five races and was by' Chief Ruler from Jlellssa, a sister to Grotesque and half-sister to Bathos, both well-performed two-year-olds. Beau Vaals also comes from this family. Hoodikl was bred at The Grange Stud, Westmere, and was bought at the January sales by Mr. S. Sierefs, Wanganui, for IflOgns. /
Additional Acceptors. The following horses were omitted from the telegraphed list of acceptors for the Waikato Hunt Club’s meeting on Labour Day: Members’ Memorial. Town Section, 7.4; Bollard Memorial, Orakau, S.O; Bardowie Handicap, Royal Battle. 8.4.
Coining to Trentham. Though Prudentia’s name appeared In the list of acceptors for the South Canterbury meeting on Saturday, she was not an acceptor and did not take part. She is duo to race at Trentham this week aud will be ridden by P. Spratt, who was on her when she won a double at the Canterbury Easter meeting. Racing Unluckily. Man’s Pride, a Man’s Pal maiden, continues to race unluckily. In each of his three starts to date he has failed to secure a clear run, and again at Masterton he was checked twice, the first time severely, and then failed by a neck to win, His turn should not be long delayed. Coming Back to Form. Colonel Rouge ran another satisfactory race on the flat at Masterton, his second outing since the enforced spell he had after being hurt during the running of the Sydenham Hurdles at Riccarton in August. This jumper is looking in nice order for his Glen Hurdle engagement at Trentham.
An Improving Horse. Now in his third season, Glenfalloch Is training on to reach the form he promised when he won as a three-year-old hack at Trentham last season. In his winning exploits at Hastings and Masterton at his last two starts, Glenfalloch took the honours through gameness and stamina, and those races are certain to improve him. Ho will be ridden in the Wellington Handicap by Wiggins. Untimely Check.' Tho Monarch ricked himself slightly last week and this probably accounted for his failure to run up to expectations in the Masterton Handicap, in which he beat only Piastre homo. Whether he can be Improved sufficiently in condition this week for the Wellington Handicap is problematical. Rau Poorly.
After his dashing finish in the Ling Memorial at Otaki, Piastre was expected to show improvement on the Mastertou track, where the long straight suits a horse with a solid finishing run, but be ran one of the worst races of his career. The surface of the track was slippery with raiu, and this may have had something to do with Piastre’s poor display.
Not Recovered Tot Evidently Royal Heir has not yet recoveted from the setback he received on his trip to Auckland for the Great Northern Guineas. In the hack six at Masterton he was prominent in front with Water Hovnd, and at the last furlong appeared to be going with something in reserve, but he then stopped in a stride. Royal Heir is a bold galloper, but up till tho present he lacks solidity. Dashing Finisher. No horse racing at Masterton finished with greater dash than Mr. Valiant, who came from a long way baek to take second place .in the Gladstone Handicap. Ho huug out most ot the way, but once he selfed down to his work he moved impressively. This Mr. Standfast colt comes from a mare who left several brilliant gallopers,' among them the speedy Gold Chase, and on appearance he looks something better than the average hack. Back to Form,
The return to winning form of Patu Po was one of the pleasing features of the Mastertou meeting. Last year this Nightly gelding won a highweight double at®i rentham, but a burst hoof put him oulTof action for a loug time. He appears to be completely recovered from the trouble and his success on Saturday was achieved iu the manner of a genuine stayer. He is engaged in the longer hack races at the Wellington meeting.
