Father J. L. Kingan, M.C., S.M. Father »T. D. Kingan, M.C., 8.A., S.M., is aged 41. and was sports master at St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream, till he became a chaplain. He was educated at St. Mary's and St. Bede's College, Christchurch, and studied for the priesthood at tiie Marist seminary. Greenmeadows, being ordained in 1921). He was chosen to go to Romo, lint health reiisons prevented this. He was on tiie staff of St. Patrick’s College. Wellington, in 1930. and next year became a foundation member of the college staff .at Silverstream, where he remained till tne end of 19-10, except for a period nt the end of 1935 and 1936 when he was on the r-’ominary staff at Greenmeadows. la 1937, he became sports master nt Silverstream, a position he filled with much success, the college performances benefiting from his enthusiasm and coaching ability. From 1940 he gave assistance at Trenthnm camp, nnd in January, 1941, ho was appointed Catholic chaplain there. Three months later he sailed with the sth Reinforcements and has been in tiie Middle East ever since. He has previously been mentioned in dispatches. His father. Mr. S. Kingan. resides in Christchurch, and a sister, Mrs. Beryl Houlihan. in Hastings. Tiie award of n Military 7 Cross is for bravery in the field and is an unusual one to be given chaplains. Padre C. L. Walls, of the 2nd Wellington Regiment, received it in the Great War. and also two New Zealand Catholic priests, both now dead.
