Bitter Fighting In Melitopol
. LONDON, October 17. The main weight of the Russian attack continues to be in the south from the Dnieper bend to the Sea of Azov, but Moscow also reports Russian advances in the middle Dnieper and in White Russia.
The Germans are struggling to hold Melitopol, where they are being dislodged street by street and even house by house, resisting with desperate and fanatical fury. Losses on both sides are high. Other. Soviet forces are moving south down the railway from Zaporozhe. The Russians have extended their bridgehead in the Kremenchug area, where the Germans are throwing whole divisions in in an effort to hold them.
