Members Arrive In New Zealand

PROBLEMS OF PACIFIC

Four members of the special British Military, Naval ami Air Mission in the I’acitic, accompanied by two United States military officers, arrived in Wellington on Saturday afternoon. The mission is headed by Major-General J. S. Lethbridge. With him in Wellington are Rear-Admiral F. 11. AV. Goolden, senior naval member, Air Commodore L. L. Miiele.i’n. senior air member, and Lieutenant-Colonel I>. Andrews. They are accompanied by Colonel C. Deware and Colonel R. Robbins, of the United States Army.

The Mission is engaged in the study of all problems of tactics, weapons, supply, transport, communications and medical services'connected with the war against Japan other than future operational planning. It has spent several weeks in the United States and will later go to Australia and India. Major-General Lethbridge lias already had a discussion with the Minister' of Finance, Mr. Nash, and members of the mission arc to meet the chiefs of New Zealand's three fighting services this morning. They will spend about a week in the Dominion, inspecting naval, army and air force training establishments.

Major-General John Sydney Lethbridge. C.8.E., M.C., commander of the mission, is a. graduate of the Staff College, and saw service in France, belgiuin. Afghanistan and North-Av est r'vontier from 1914 to 1921, with the Royal ■Engineers. Since 1936 he has been attached to the War Office, where as Director of Liaison and Munitions he has done outstanding work. He has been largely responsible for the smooth working” and admirable spirit which has always existed in the Array Sub-Committee of the London Munitions Assignment Board.
