PRISONERS OF JAPANESE
A report on the Japanese prisoners of war eamp known as Tamazo, which is a branch of the Taiwan camp, has been received by the Prisoners of War Inquiry Office. It is situated near the town of Tamazo and about 10 miles from the coast. It contains 117 of the highestranking prisoners with their servants and cooks. They comprise officers from the British, Dutch, Canadian, Philippines, Malaya, Java, Sumatra, Hong Kong and Guam forces. Buildings are one-storeyed military barracks, each containing seven rooms. Four blankets, two sheets, a. mattress, cover, pillow and palliase are supplied. There are washing places and two Japanese baths which will each take 30 men. Flour and other cereals,, meat, fish, fats, vegetables, sugar, salt and tea are supplied daily. Coffee, eggs, milk and canned vegetables are ocacsionally supplied. There is no vegetable garden, but the prisoners keep poultry and have 11 goats. They (have a certain amount of clothes and shoes and. some additional articles have been supplied, as well as Japanese clogs. There is a Japanese army doctor and three prisoner doctors. Up to June there had not been any deaths. The prisoners .can walk freely and have indoor games, but no outdoor games are played. They have a scanty library of their own, and receive English editions of the Japanese newspapers. The cable states that the National Y.AI.C.A. has since applied for a few hundred volumes of books. Gramophone music is played for two hours after dinner. Religious services are held on Sundays. The financial situation is stated to be good with deposits amounting to 150,000 yen. Sir Mark Young and Sir Shenton Thomas receive regular monthly payments through the Swiss Legation. .
