Late War News HEAVY FIGHTING CONTINUES
Volturno Battle PROGRESS MADE IN HILLS LONDON, October 15. The battle across the Volturno River continues to shape well. An Allied communique today says that heavy fighting is proceeding along the line of the Volturno. It points out that the Volturno is a formidable obstacle, with its steep northern bank and fastmoving stream, and a correspondent says that rain which has fallen since the attack was launched added to the difficulties. Troops and tanks are still crossing in large numbers. It is confirmed that an Allied force was landed from the sea beyond the mouth of the Volturno, and later two British destroyers and a Dutch gunboat shelled the enemy. A late report suggests that these troops have now been joined by forces Which crossed the river. , East of Capua, considerable inroads have been made into the German positions in the hill country, from which strong forces of enemy artillery have been able to shell long stretches of the-river.
