STRONGER ATTACK ON BURMA ROAD

Five Japanese Columns

('Received October 15, 8.20 p.m.) CHUNGKING, October 14.

Reinforced Japanese, in five columns, have pushed northward along the Burma Road at the entrance to south-western China, where the Chinese are resisting desperately. Most of the fighting appears to be on the west bank of the upper Salween River.

A Chinese communique said that two new Japanese drives have won a. position on the west shore of Lake fihuanhungchiao, from which the enemy shelled the Chinese positions on the opposite shore. Chinese counter-fire silenced the Japanese guns and caused heavy damage to the enemy. Extremely heavy fighting continues on the Siaofeng sector, and there Imre been heavy casualties on both sides. The Chinese recaptured Potien, but reinforced Japanese, supported by many bombers, forced the Chinese back to the south, where they are now engaging in bloody fighting.
