TWO AGAINST 20

Desperate Game Of Hide-And-Seek (Official War Correspondent. N.Z.E.F.) ADVANCED PACIFIC BASE, Oct. 1. There have been many instances of heroism in which New Zealanders hauled their colleagues to safety. One sergeant crawled 10 yards with a wounded platoon commander while his mates endeavoured to quieten the Japanese with hand grenades. The sergeant pushed his way 20 yards more to the coast, where the wounded officer was evacuated by barge. In another sector two wounded men lying in a field of fire of Japanese machineguns were dragged to safety by a subaltern amid a hail of bullets. Two privates isolated from their platoon accounted for more than 20 Japanese in a- five hours’ “game” of desperate hide-and-seek in an enemy camp area till o,ne of the New Zealanders rejoined his platoon. The other was captured. The captured New Zealander was stripped naked, but sub-' sSquenjUy knocked out two Japanese and escaped in the darkness to hide defenceless among rocks in the sea till rescued two days later.
