NEW RATION BOOKS

Applications At General Post Office The issue of new ration books began on Monday and since then an increasing number of ’Wellington people each day have made application at the main office in the basement of the General Post Otlice. Books have been issued as follows: Monday 1516, Tuesday 2483; Wednesday 2760, Thursday 3098. Indications yesterday afternoon were that the total for the day would reach 5000. In addition, of course, books are also being issued at night by suburban offices. Though it was announced that books would not be issued nt the Rationing Office in Parish Street, at least 4000 people so far have gone there. An official of the Rationing Office said yesterday that, though rationing began in April, 4942, people still were coming forward occasionally who had never at any time had a ration book. Some of them hail been in jail, others had been living in the backblocks and others had not applied because they had not paid their Social Security levies up to date. He also said that between 20 and 30 lost ration books were handed iu at the office each week. If they bore the owner’s name and address they were returned, but in most cases they, did not.
