BUILDING OF HOUSES
Suggestion Of Further Restrictions POSITION OF SMALL BUILDER
During discussions on the Wellington City Council’s bousing policy at a meeting on Wednesday night Cr. R. 11. Nimmo said that one of the main platforms of the citizens’ candidates’ policy had been the construction of homes, but the council had been up against impossible conditions and coul'd not rightly be accused of not carrying out that policy. Cr. Nimmo said he had been informed by the Commissioner of Defence Construction that further restrictions upon the type of houses that could. be built were to be imposed, limitinig the number of blectric points, restricting electric installations and other materials anil equipment. Those restrictions, he said, followed upon representations of the American authorities, for in America the building trade was operating under severely restricted conditions. It was essential, therefore, to revise its original conceptions. The council could not build houses to anything like the originally intended dimensions. There was a current rumour, continued Cr, Nimmo, that the small builder was not to be permitted to carry ou and would, not be able to obtaiu labour or materials. That, the commissioner had assured him, was incorrect; there wag no intention to place such discouragement before the small builder, for whom there was a real place in housing work.
