PETROL FOR PRIVATE MOTORISTS

Position Called Scandalous DEMAND FOR INCREASED ALLOCATION Dominion Special Service. WANGANUI, October 14. "The petrol position so far as the private motorist is concerned is absolutely scandalous,” said Dr. E. E. Porritt at the annual meeting of the Automobile Association (Wanganui). “And they say we are not patriotic,” he added. “The motorist has laid down and taken every kick that it is possible to get, and he has taken it because he is a super patriot.” All New Zealand wanted to see the Maori V.C. honoured, but 10,600 gallons, the amount of petrol allocated for the ceremony at Riuntoi’ia, was excessive, said Dr. Porritt. Motorists should demand a higher petrol allocation, and every effort should be made for a full coupon as from November 1. “We don’t want to interfere with the war effort.” he said, “but the economic waste in this country through ears not being kept mobile is terrific. If the petrol is not in the country we don’t want it. but the petrol is in the country. We get less petrol than motorists in Australia, and should not put up with this sort of thing any longer.” The president, Mr. P. D. England, said the North Island Motor Union had frequently taken up the question of petrol and tyres with the Government, and was continuing to do so. “For some time the union has made liold statements about the way the Minister of Transport has treated the private motorist, but we seem to be up against a dead end ail the time,” said Mr. England. “We always get the same answer: Benzine is not available for the private motorist.” In reply to a question, Mr. England said the tyre position, so far as trucks were concerned, was satisfactory, but the union had been told that tyres of the 609 » 16 class were not available for private fiotorists.

A resolution urging the Government to increase the petrol allocation to the private motorist was carried, the meeting being of the opinion that a full coupon should be available from November 1.
