RUMANIAN ARMY
Reported Withdrawal To
Former Frontier
LONDON, October 12. The Budapest correspondent of the Stockholm newspaper “Svenska Dagbladet” says that Hitler’s Rumanian allies, 100 miles ahead of the Russian armies, are abandoning the next great river defence line and uncovering the approaches to the Balkans. “The Rumanians are evacuating the trans-Dniester region, the stretch of land between the Bug and the Dniester wliich thev have occupied since 1941,” he says. “The families of the occupation troops and also civil servants have been ordered to return to Rumania. Many have already arrived. Measures are being taken to carry off all cattle and grain.” This report, if correct, means that the Rumanians are withdrawing into the province of Bessarabia on 'tlie 1920-40 Rumanian frontier, which followed .the River Dniester.
Moscow today reports that the air arm of the (Soviet Black Sea Fleet attacked an enemy port, sinking a 2000-ton enemy transport, 11 landing craft, and one motor torpedo-boat, and seriously damaging many other vessels.
