N.Z. LINEN FLAX
Research In Belfast
LONDON, October 12. Research in Belfast may lead to an improvement in the quality of New Zealand linen flax and make it suitable for the manufacture of aircraft fabric.
Though New Zeallmd’s linen flax is of good quality, it has hitherto inclined to be brittle, and therefore it is only suitable for certain purposes, such as thread or coarse canvas. Research carried out bv the Linen Industries Research Institute at Belfast is believed to have got down to the cause of the trouble. It is found that whereas Irish linen flax is sculhcd easily, the fibre bundles separating from the cortical cells or waste material, the fibres of the New Zealand linen flax hold together in small groups instead of separating singly as with the Irish. This accounts for the coarsencssIt will now be the job of New Zealand linen flax-growers to secure finer separation of the fibre bundles from the cortical cells. The answer may lie in the soil or climatic conditions. It may be necessary to confine growing to certain districts, or to use fertilizers. Full details of the institute’s researches have already been sent to the New Zealand Government.
