GERMAN STATEMENT
Awaiting Information (Received October 13, 7 p.m.) LONDON, October 12.. The German news agency’s diplomatic commentator, quoted by Berlin radio, insisted that the agreement did not surprise political quarters in Berlin. He said: “If the Wilhelmstrasse for the present is avoiding issuing a statement this is because it is awaiting additional information, particularly from Lisbon. Nevertheless, the opinion is held iu Berlin that Portugal, obviously under strong British and American . pressure, has agreed to concessions which are celebrated in Britain and the United States as valuable assets in the fight against Germany.” According to Berlin radio, Terceira Island, 100 miles north-west of St. Michael, has been placed at the Allies’ disposal. The radio added that Portugal agreed that all Axis Consulates iu the Azores should be closed and all Axis nationals should leave the islands.
