NEW WELLINGTON CITY COUNCILLOR

Mr. M. S. Galloway, M.C.

Mr. M'. S. Galloway, M.C., of Khandallab, was appointed by the Wellington City Council early this morning after a discussion starting at midnight to fill the vacancy caused by, the death of Cr. W. Dunean. This is the second such vacancy during the term of the present council. The first arose from the death of Cr. L. McKenzie when Mr. It. M“Keen, M.P., the first on the list of defeated candidates at the last elections (no Labour Candida les were successful) was appointed to the vacancy. This morning, the mayor. Mr. Hislop, said Unit his view was that the next on the list was the appropriate appointment ami ho moved that this person, Mr. C. 11. Chapman, M.l’., be appointed. Cr. it. 11. Nimino seconded this. As an amendment Cr. H. L. Maealisler moved Mr. Galloway’s appointment. He said Ngaio ami Khandallah representations had been made to him that their large area should have someone ou the Council. Mr. Galloway did not contest (he last election but at the previous one he polled 19,000 votes. When it suited Cr. It. MeKeen, M.l’., he favoured the next: on the list but he had had personal experience of when Cr. MeKeen did not favour this principle. Mr. Galloway was a returned soldier of the Great War anu it would be a compliment to returned men at a time like this to appoint him. Cr. MeKeen said he agreed that Mr. Galloway would make an excellent councillor but he condemned the proposal. It areas wanted representation individually they would have to revert to the antiquated ward system. The council hau appointed to the Hospital Board a Mr. Amos who bad not even been a candidate above Mr. Counts, M.F., who got 12,225 votes which were nullified by a handful of councillors. Sievwright and Stevens).

Cr. AV. J. Gaudin then moved a further amendment for the appointment of Mr. H. F. Toogood, a member of the Hospital Board. There was no seconder. Cr. R. A. AVright then proposed MrJ. N. AVallace, a former councillor. Cr. M. ItTaser seconded this but it was defeated. „ , ■ Cr. I’l. Al. Gilmer then proposed Miss Amy Kane, but got no seconder. I m not‘lonely on this council by any means, but another woman would help matters along and assist me to steer the minds of the council along other lines, said Cr. Gilmer. , The proposal for Air. Galloway s appointment was then put as a motion and carried.
