Record Entries For Yearling Sales
(By St. Simon.) The jockey R. Beale has lodged au appeal to the Racing Conference appeal judges against the decision of A tickland District Committee winch confirmed the Pakuranga Hunt Club stewards suspension of Beale for three months, and increased it to six months in connexion with the Huirangi Sun-Forest Glen incident at the finish of the Pakuranga Hunt Cup Steeplechase. The appeal is likely to bo heard .in Wellington during race week.
Yearling Sales. . , , Entries for the eighteenth national sale of yearling thoroughbreds to bo held at the Trentham stables during Wellington Cup week in January number 241, of which 143 are colts. This is a record entry. The leading stallioil Foxbridge has the largest representation with 24 hits. Battle Song has 14 and Robin Goodfellow will have 13 of his first New Zealand crop in the catalogue. Broiefort and Defaulter each have nine lots. Coronach, Ringmaster and Theio, eight each, Gyuerium, Lang Bian, Ninth Duke. Phaleron Bay, Solici-tor-General and Jovial Son, seven each; Revelation, Royal Chief and Christopher Robin, six each; Man’s Pal, Medieval Knight, Rhodes Scholar, St. Boswells, Tiderace, Lord Quex and Beau Repaire. five each: Bulandshar, Defoe and Sir Crusoe, four each; Night March, Spiral, Vermeer, Paper Slipper and Inflation, three each. Trentham Pay-outs. The Wellington Racing Club is- arranging to have all the ordinary pay-out windows on all totalizator houses at Trentham open from 11 a.m. 011 the second day of the spring meeting (Labour Day) to pay out dividends on the last race on the lirst day for those who do not wait to collect on the Saturday. Late dividends on the first seven races on the lirst day will be available only at the late dividend windows on the second day. Masterion Races.
The Masterton Racing Club has secured splendid fields for its spring meeting to bo held this week, almost the entire card being comprised of horses with engagements at Trentham. Opaki is one of the best country tracks in the Dominion, its exceptionally long straight making it an ideal testing ground for the bigger meeting to follow next week. 'The Masterton club has made arrangements with the Railways Department for trains from Wellington and Palmerston North and intermediate stations. The Wellington train is due back iu the city at 9.25 p.m. and the Pahnertson North patrons will be home by 7.45 p.m. Dominate Shows Form,
Having his second race since Ills arrival in Australia, Dominate was beaten a neck by Fairway Freddie in the second division of the Quality Handicap, £OOO, run at Moonee Valley. .Most of the newspapers in .Melbourne made favourable rel'erenco to the ex-New Zealander’s finishing run, and he is expected to do better on the longer straight at Flemington. Riding at Masterton.
The Matamata apprentices 1.. Galvin and A. Toki will be riding at the Masterton meeting this week. Both boys rode regularly. at meetings around the Wellington district before their transfer to Matamata, and recently they have ridden well in the north. Galvin was on Atatu iu the Great Northern Guineas and Toki won the Flying Handicap on Harmony and rode tho winning double the previous week at Paeroa. Galvin has been engaged to ride Typhoon at Mastertou. Broken Down.
The Posterity gelding Dynasty has broken down and his trainer. J. Puti, thinks it will be a long time before he is able to race again. He was bred and raced by Mr. G. M. Currie, who sold him last year to Mr. H. F. Wood, Wellington. ' Change of Stables,
Imperium, who is raced by Messrs. T. J. and T. M. Brennan, Wellington, recently joined up with A. M. Wright’s team at Awapuni. Locrian, who has been spelling at Kairanga for some mouths, Is to join the same stable in the near future to be prepared also for Jumping races. Both Caught Colds. A southern report states that Bonny Flight and Royal Flight both caught colds on the trip to Wingatui. Bonny Flight was withdrawn from tho McLean Stakes and will not appear now till the Welcome'Stakes at the New Zealand Cup meeting, Royal Flight won the Dunedin Guineas and proved the master of Invulnerable in the heavy going. It has yet to bp proved that she is superior to Invulnerable on top of the ground. Still on Crutches.
A. 13. Ellin pays an occasional visit to the track work at Rieearton, but is etill on crutches and has no idea when he will be able, to dispense with them. It is four months since he met with an accident at Ellerslie when Evans Head had his fatal fall in the Great Northern Hurdles. Still a Maiden. There is an impression abroad that Sal’s Pal is not now eligible for maiden races because of the win he scored at .the South Canterbury meeting recently. He was disqualified for that race and therefore remains a maiden. Ifriistration Retired.
The Baffles mare Frustration ,Is being retired from racing and is to take up breeding dutieo this season. She will be mated with Orelio, a son of Limond.
Back in Work. W. C. Griffith has Alienate back in his stable at Hastings, but the jumper is not to bo hurried and will not be asked to race till next year. He hurt himself early in the winter campaign through overreaching, and had to miss all the valuable races.
llakan ui’s Programme. Ilakanul claims a sprint engagement on the first day of the Wellington spring meeting, and most likely he will contest the Harcourt Stakes on the second day. He was second to Kindergarten in this event last year. AU going well with him in the meantime Rakanui will be prepared lor the New Zealand Cup, in which he finished third last year to Royal Lancer and Gladynev, McLean Stakes Winner.
Lyndal, winner of the McLean Stakes at Wingatui, is a two-year-old filly by Man’s Pal from Half Note, by Paper Money from Pink Terrace, a Tractor mare who won the New Zealand Oaks for the late Mr. J. A. Ainge in 1026. Lyndal is raced by Mr. A. Ruthyen, a Southland sportsman, and is trained at Riverton by A. McKay. By Wild Chase.
Runaway, runner-up to Lyndal, is a bay gelding by Wild Chase from Traction, by Tractor from Droski, dam of Ravenna and Overdrawn. Runaway was bred and is raced by Mr. L. C. Hazlett, Dunedin.
A Cheap Yearling. Tile third horse, Piccolo, was one of the cheap lots al the January yearling sales, being bought by Mr. J. Mussen, Christchufeh, for 55gns. He is a bay geklin" by. Inflation from Sweet (Music, a half-sister by Nigger Minstrel to Colonel Bogey, and was bred by Mr. A. Southey, Eketahuna.
Services Appreciated. The resignation of Mr. T. Parata as judge, to the Otaki -Maori Racing Club was recently announced and opportunity was taken by the stewards of the club during the spring meeting on Saturday to make him a presentation in appreciation of the service he rendered the club. The president, Air. Hone Makimerene, said no one appreciated more than lie did the valuable work Air. Parata performed during the years he had been with them. He regretted losing such a valuable worker for the club. Air. R. Alawhete, patron, made reference to Mr. Parata’s fine record. He said that Air. Parata, in his young days, was an outstanding footballer and referee, and was now a member of the Maori Advisory Board. On behalf of the Otaki Alaori Racing Club, he presented , Air. Parata with a cheque and a silver cigarette stand as a token ot’ the esteem in which he was ’held among them. In reply, Mr. Parata said he appreciated the gifts and the thought behind them. It was one of the greatest honours which had been paid him. He regretted that he was forced to relinquish his post as judge because of ill-health, but he realized that the position called for a younger man. Wellington Acceptances.
