The Lenin State Library in Moscow is the second biggest library in the world, after the Library of Congress. Washington. says the “Canterbury Public Library Journal.” It contains 9,500.000 hooks and periodicals, and the total shelf length is 250 kilometres. In the last year before the war. 826.000 persons visited the library, and 4,100,000 books were issued to readers. When the war broke out, 3,000,000 books were removed to places of safety, and rare books and manuscripts were sent out of Moscow. A large reservoir for water was dug in the grounds of the library as a protection against fires. More than 300 incendiary bombs which were dropped on the roof by the Germans were extinguished by library workers, but in spite of air raid .alarms, the library continued to function normally.
