STATE OF PARTIES
Declaration Subject To Amendment NATIONALISTS’ NET GAIN, 9 SEATS With the declaration of tlie results of the general election, tlie Government will have 45 seats in tlie new House of Representatives, the National Party will have 31 members, including one independent Nationalist, and there will be one Independent. At the dissolution the Government bad 50 of the SO seats in tlie House, the National Party 25, and there were four Independents and one Democratic Labour member.
Tlie declarations already made are all subject to amendment so far as the number of votes polled by candidates is concerned, for the official count figures for the armed forces in tlie Pacific and tlie Middle East have, not yet been received. These are expected within the next day or so. No change, however, is expected in any actual result, with jierluips the possible exception of Eden, where the leading candidate, Mr. W. T. Anderton (Labour) has a majority of 10. Tlie forces' votes have so far favoured Mr. Anderton, and in view of this tendency it is regarded as likely that the additional votes from overseas will increase rather than diminish his present slender majority.
As the situation stands at -present, the National Party has made a net gain of nine seats and Labour lias a net loss of five seats.
