Entries For 1943-44 Season

Eleven entries for the Wellington Cricket Association’ll senior ■ chilinpionsliip were received at yesterday s meeting of the management committee.. Ihey were: Midland-Wellington, University, Karori, Petone, Air Force, Institute, Old Boys, Kilbirine, Hutt, St. Patrick s College Old Boys, and Army. Lower grade entries* were; Junior, 15 ; third grade, U , fourth grade, 7. The senior entries are the same as last year, with the exception of Wellington Regiment. They were referred to the senior championship committee to bring down a report for the next meeting. . > Wellington College advised the withdrawal of its entry as the team was transferring to the Secondary Schools Association. . . , . „ Reasons for the action taken were given by Mr. B. A. Paetz, chief among these being the improvement in the standard of cricket among tho other secondary schools, and the desire to return to twoday matches. The withdrawal was accepted.. The institute elub inquired if the association would negotiate with the military authorities to permit players in the. forces who would not be. required lor service teams to be granted leave to play with their civilian' clubs. It was decided to contact the Army education and welfare department. The secretary, Mr. J. A. Carrad, reported on the meeting to consider the formation of a. New Zealand Council or Sport. .Notification of the meeting hai. been received from the New Zealand Cricket ’Council, but too late for the association to take action. The New Zealand Cricket Council had expressed doubt whether any good purpose could b-« achieved by the formation ot the new hoily. . ... . ~ Mr Paetz inquired if the association was taking any action iu the matter ot procuring material for the clubs. He also mentioned the problem of repairs.. The deputy-chairman, Mr. W. A. Baker, said the chief problem would be the supply of cricket, balls. He intimated that he would be attending a meeting of the New Zealand Council of Sport, tins week and would raise the matter there. There were present Messrs. W. A. Baker (deputy-chairman), J. Reid, .A. Ronaldson, L. J. Brabin, J. B. Banks, H. E. Moore, B. A. Paetz, R. W. Coupland, B. Pegler, D. P. Caird, J. B. Watson, and J. A. Carrad (secretary).
