CLOSING OPPOSED

Normandale Crossing The works committee reported to the Lower Hutt City Council that it had drawn the attention of the Public Works Department to the danger, owing to lack of visibility, of the Normandale railway crossing, and a reply had been received from the department stating that action had been suspended as it seemed that several interested parties were likely to raise anew the suggestion of closing the crossing. The department desired the council’s advice on the matter.’ The committee recommended that the department be advised that the committee had visited the site, and was of opinion that land should be obtained from adjoining owners to improve visibility, and that strong representations had been made to the council against the closing of the crossing. The committee also suggested that it might he desirable to discuss the position with the department’s officers on the site.

The committee’s report was adopted, the mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, remarking that the council would never agree to the closing of the crossing without putting up a stiff fight.
