TWO-DAY RAID ON WAKE ISLAND
Enemy Lost 61 Planes
LONDON, October 10. The United States planes which raided Wake Island, in the north Pacific, heavily hit Japanese positions, and 01 enemy planes were destroyed. The raid was carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday by a carrier task force and landbased naval Liberators. Thirteen American planes were lost. A communique from Pearl Harbour on the bombardment of Wake Island and its two neighbouring islands states that the first attack was made at dawn and the bombardment lasted two days. Heavy damage was done by the bombardment, and tires were started on the three islands and installations were yvtecked. The bombardment was so effective that only •weak opposition was encountered by the bombers, which dropped 320 tons of bombs. The damage to American ships. and casualties to personnel were negligible. Though the communique makes no estimate of Japanese casualties, a Liberator pilot says he saw a considerable number of enemy dead.
