BARGE ACTIVITY

Air Raids On Japanese (Received October 10, 8.40 p.m.)

SYDNEY. October 10. With the Japanese hold on the Solomons bases deteriorating rapidly, the Allied air force is maintaining its attacks on enemy barge communications. General MacArthur’s weekend communiques report destructive attacks on these craft round Ohoiseul. Barge activity has been noted on the south-west coast of this island. Farther to the north-west a Liberator on reconnaissance bombed and damaged a 10,000-tou transport in the Kavieng, New Ireland, area. The transport was one of three merchantmen, accompanied by three destroyers, which were sighted north of the equator, near Greenwich Island, and the Liberator attacked through heavy flak. Widespread damage was done on Bougainville Island when Admiral Halsey’s escorted heavy bombers attacked the Kahili aerodrome. Hits were noted among the parked aircraft. Three of our planes are missing. An air patrol over Vella Lnvella shot down one out of 15 enemy fighters.
