Admitting four charges of supplying incorrect retiirns with the intention of avoiding payment of the sales tax, Janies Piper, upholsterer, was fined f.2,>ovi each information, making a total of £lOO, together with costs, by Mr. Levien, S.M., t°The prosecution showed that he had supplied quarterly returns for last year instead of monthly, the amount being larwly understated in each instance. Mr. Thvvaitcs, Piper’s counsel, said that defendant had a one-man business and had | )Cen in ill-health. As lie would now have to par the full amount of the tax, totalling £550 for four returns, the imposition of even the minimum fine would be a severe penalty.
