State Control of Mines? The "War Cabinet, according to the London “Herald” is considering proposals for taking over the coalmines and putting them under State control.
Increased Allotment. The U.S. Senate voted to increase the allotment for the dependent children of servicemen to 30 dollars a month for the first child, and 20 dollars for each additional child.
U.S. Super-Bombers. The United States is building superbombers able to fly Hie Atlantic, bomb Germany, and return without refuelling. This was disclosed by Mr. Elmer Davis, Director of the Office of War Information.
Cairo’s Heat-Wave. After an unusually temperate summer, the troops in the Cairo area have suffered a minor heat-wave, states the N.Z.E.F. Official News Service. They had more than three days, with the highest temperature recorded this year llfldeg. There have been electrical disturbances and several heavy rain showers, which are unusual at this time of the year.
World Series Baseball. In New York on Thursday before a record crowd of 69,990, the New York Yankees defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 in the third ma tch of the world’s baseball series. The final scores were: Yankee.’. six runs, eight hits, no errors. Cardinals: two runs, six hits, four errors. The winning pitcher w’as. Hank Borowy. Yankees are leading 2-1 in the series.
