WAR PRISONERS TRICKED
LONDON, October 7. The South African, General Khipper. who recently escaped in Italy, said by the end of August most of the Allied prisoners had been removed northward. Isolated from the outside world, the prisoners were over-optimistic when the news of Allied successes came through. The Germans exploited this by broadcasting reports of Allied landings far up the Italian mainland, and used a strongly accented American voice over Naples radio: The (rick succeeded, for many of (lie prisoners made for the places mentioned and were captured by the Germans.
