Late News GERMANLINE ON VOLTURNO
Held In Strength Against Allies HEAVY BATTLE ON EAST COAST LONDON, October 7.' Today’s communique from the Allied headquarters says that the heaviest lighting in Italy is still on the coastal sectors. The Eighth Army troops at Termoll have been reinforced, and British destroyers are bombarding the enemy positions north-west of the town. An enemy attack with tanks and infantry along the coastal road was repulsed. The Fifth Army has been working forward toward the Volturno River.
A correspondent at headquarters says that the Germans are reported to be holding the Volturno line in considerable strength. However, the heaviest fighting is on the east coast. It is pointed- out that tlie Eighth Army’s hold on Termoli constitutes a potential threat to all the German positions between Naples and Rome. To iheet this threat the Germans switched an entire panzer division to the east, and it was this which was repulsed on the coast road.
