VITAL JUNCTION BOMBED

Air activity over the Italian battle area has been considerably increased in scale during the past 24 hours, writes it correspondent at Allied headquarters in Nortn Africa. The principal operation of the period was a heavy and conceiitrated daylight attack by Flying Fortresses on the Bolzano .junction near Bologna. ' The junction is of great strategic importance to the Geimans. and the attack may well have an influence on the future figliting. The route lias a very high proportion of the traffic that Hows from the Brenner Pass. Milan, and Trieste, .to Florence and Rome by both the electrified railway system and motor roads of recent construction. An Allied communique says that in this attack strong enemy opposition was encountered. Medium opposition was encountered. Medium bombers made attacks on highways and bridges at Formin Isernia. and Migano. Fighters and fighter-bombers have maintained patrols over the battle area, attacking motor coiiecntrntions and trains. During these and other operations In enemy aircraft were destroyed. Six of our planes are missing.
