MESSAGE TO FLEET
Retiring Admiral’s Regret
(British Official Wireless.) (Received October 6, 7.55 p.m.) RUGBY, October 5. In a message to the fleet, Admiral of the Fleet Sir Dudley Round, who has retired from the position of First Sea Lord because of ill-health, expressed his great regret at giving up his four years’ task. He said he had been sustained through many dark and dangerous days by the fighting spirit of the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy. He asked for full cooperation for his successor. Admiral of the Fleet Sir Andrew Cunningham. “Admiral Cunningham goes to his new post with the complete, confidence of every airman, soldier and sailor in this entire Allied command. His departure is a blow for us, but we are proud of him, ’, is a message by General Eisenhower on Admiral Cunningham’s appointment as First Sea Lord of the Admiralty.
