CHRISTCHURCH, October 6, Values were again high at the Addington market today, the exception being tat sheep, another large entry of these showing a slight easing for best quality and a marked drop for light to medium ewes. A smaller entry of fat cattle met with a further advance aud the improved feed position was reflected in the store sheep section, ewe hoggets specially selling at the highest prices of the season. The store sheep entry comprised mostly ewe hoggets of excellent quality and the prices were (he highest for the season. One line of 220 Corriedales realized 3!)/- and a second draft made 38/-. Others made from 33/3 to 37/6 and medium to 28/9. Of 370 ewes with lambs at foot offered, one line of 28 halfbred sheep with 33 Southdown lambs made 22/1, all counted. The balance, of varying quality, sold from 15/4 to 17/1. There was au easing for better class fat eheep and a decided drop for light and unfinished ewes., but another sound sale was recorded. Young ewes sold well, but there was a decline of up to 4/a head for old sheep on last week's values. The highest price for wethers was again 64/1, which was the top figure at the previous two sales. This was for a line of southern sheep which made from 48/7 to that figure. A line of 100 shorn wethers sold from 36/1 to 44/1. Best price for young ewes was 54/1. Good sheep sold well throughout, but there was very little demand for light to medium quality. The fat cattle entry totalled 426 against 450 last week. The proportion of good quality was smaller today than previously, many half-finished cattle being forward. The market opened at about last week’s level, but speedily firmed and till well on in the sale there was an average improvement of about 15/- a head. In the later stages, however, there was a steadying and, taken over the whole market, values were about 1/0 per 1001 b. dearer than a week ago. This made the sale the highest for many years. Best beef made from 66/- to 71/- per 1001 b., good 61/- to (15/-, medium 5-1/- to 59/-. ordinary to 49/-, and inferior to 42/-. Best heifer beef 61/t.o 60/-. good 5(1/- to 09/-, medium 51/-. Best cow beef to 57/-, good to 59/-, ordinary to 42/-, and inferior to 37/-. The porker entry was of medium size, but competition was not so keen and values were easier by 1/- to 2/- a head. The yarding in the chopper section was again large, but the sale was sound and fully up to last, week’s rates. Baconers met with a dragging sale and values for lightweights were easier by from 4/. to 5/- a head and for heavy weights up to 15/a head. The average price per lb. was Bd. to 9d. WANGANUI WANGANUI. October 6. Freeman R. Jackson and Co., report a medium entry of fat sheep at the Wanganui stock sale and a slight rise on last week. Store sheep were in good numbers and a keen sale kept prices well up to late rates. Only ex-dairy cows were offered in the fat cattle section and they were firm at late rates. In the store c:it*ia section a small yarding of yearling heifers was firm on last week. All grades of bulls, both pedigree and grade Jerseys, despite being for the most part low conditioned, made an excellent sale. A small yarding of pigs showed :i decided improvement on Intp sales. A very niixed lot of voalors sold well. Quotations: — Sheep.—Fat wethers, In 34/-* fat maiden ewes. to 32/-; .prime ewes, to fid/*? fat, 24/6 to 27/3: prime hoggets, 27/0 to 30/-: fat. 23/- to 25/9; good ewe hoggets, to 33/10; average. 26/- to 27/4; small 20/3 to 22/9: wether hoggets. 21/4 to 24/4: small, IH/- -to 17/0: good ewes and lambs. 19/1. all counted: aged ewes with lambs. 11/3 to 14/6. all counted.
