SOCIAL DANGERS

Archbishop’s Views On Sex

Problem

Many more clinics for secret treatment and compulsory notification of babies born with venereal disease were advocated by the Archbishop of York. Dr. Cyril Garbett, in his presidential address recently. lie onoted figures showing that in England the increase of syphilis had been 120 per cent., but the proportion of all forms of venereal disease (he had been told by a reliable authority) was smaller for I his war than in the last. The rise in syphilis had been mainly among women. He dwelt at length on the condemnation of promiscuity by the church and urged that' more propaganda be furnished to bring home to all both the personal and social dangers incurred and the vital importance of early .treatment. Special care should be taken to provide suitable recreation for all isolated camps. Many more women police were required to deal with that type of girl who proved herself a nuisance and a danger to the serviceman. “What is needed.” Dr. Garbett added, “is more intelligent teaching of the Christian view of sex if we arc to avoid moral chaos.”
