HIGH SPEED CHASE

Excitement At Upper Hutt

A car that is believed to have been misappropriated in Auckland was chased by a Transport Department, traffic inspector in the Hutt Valley on Monday afternoon, the excessive speed at which it was driven attracting his attention and causing excitement in the district. By reckless driving the occupants eluded the inspector. The car was later found abandoned, and it was discovered that, though it was an Auckland car with Auckland number plates, the plates did not belong to the car. , .. The attempts to stop the car as it sped along the main road af Upper Hutt contained elements of excitement and humour. The car first attracted the attention of the inspector by exceeding the speed restriction of 30 m.p.h. several miles south of Upper Hutt. M hen the driver saw the inspector he increased speed, and the fugitive and the inspector’s car raced through Upper Hutt at more than 75 m.p.h. The driver would not stop tor the nispector’s siren, and north of Upper Hutt the inspector stopped his car to telephone ■ahead. Unexpectedly, the car he had been chasing doubled back-. Pausing by the inspector’s attended car, the men in the car stole the ignition key and drove southward toward Upper Hutt and Wellington.
