Selling Short Weight Dominion Special Service. PALMERSTON N„ October .4. Pleading guilty to charges of selling whey butter underweight, the Kairanga Dairy Company was fined £2 in the Magistrates' Court. The inspector of weights and measures said the butter had been weighed in a local grocers shop, where 22 packages revealed a total shortage of 2J per cent. Counsel for the company said the shortages were quite small and the company was in the hands of its emjiloyces regarding changes of weight. There had been no intention to defraud. The magistrate, Mr. Lawry, said that possibly the cutters were not properly tensioned. Charged with making a false statement respecting bags of coal, S. Rush and Company were fined £2. The inspector said the statements on the dockets were misleading, adding that the case arose out of carelessness and the sacks were apparently filled by guesswork. The defence blamed the labour shortage, saying the company was dependent mi what labour it could get. A lorryman bad been engaged temporarily, and, being unsatisfactory, had since been discharged.
