PORTUGAL’S ATTITUDE TO JAPAN
(Received October 3, 7 p.m.) LONDON, October 2. It is, reported in diplomatic circles that Portugal has decided to declare war on Japan, says the "Daily Telegraph's” diplomatic correspondent. The. immediate cause would be the Japanese seizure of Timor, half <sf which is Portuguese owned. ~ t. By* declaring war on Japan, the President, M. Salazar, may seek at the same time to reaffirm Portugal’s loyalty, to Britain, and may hope to secure the benefit of lend-lease arrangements with the United States, of which Portugal at present is badly in need. A food shortage has recently become acute in Madeira and Cape Verde islands, where deaths from starvation have occurred.
