BATTLESHIP’S FIRE POWER

The Navy has identified the battleship which shot down 32 Japanese planes offi Santa Cruz Island on October 16, 1942, and sank three cruisers off Save Island on November 14, 1942, as the South’ Dakota, commanded by Rear-Admiral Thomas Gatch.

The Navy explained that her identity, had not previously been disclosed because she was the first of a new class of battleships bearing new armament and greatly increased fire-power.
