NEW YORK WELCOME
Anzac Forestry Troops
NEW YORK, October 1. Tens of thousands of cheering New Yorkers, ignoring a downpour of rain, lined Broadway as 600 New Zealand and Australian forestry troops marched to the City Hall, where the mayor, Mr. La Guardia, welcomed them. It was the first time in 25 years that New Zealand and Australian soldiers had marched in New York. They created a deep impression as, moving like one man, they traversed Broadway’s canyon of sky-scrapers. Several weeks ol training with the Guards Regiment while they were in England was clearly reflected in their perfect marching. The foresters were escorted by mounted police led bv a crack military police band. At the City Hall’the salute was taken by Lieutenant-General Sturdee, alongside whom were Mr. La Guardia, Mr. Geoffrey Cox, New Zealand Charge d'Affaires, Sir Arthur Dixon, British Assistant Under-Secretary of State, Sir Godfrey Haggard, British Consul-Gen-eral, and American generals and admirals.
